Lions have a night of “firsts”

Final: Linn-Mar 5-1 Cedar Rapids Prairie

Coming into Thursday night’s game vs Prairie, the Lions hoped to not only give the Hawks their first loss, but Prairie had outscored their opponents this season 40-0….Until the 9th minute, when Ben Johnson (SR) scored the first of his three goals on a rebound given up off a Leroy Enzugusi shot.  Johnson’s second came in the 15th minute, as his left-footed shot beat the goalie to the near-post, and his third followed less than a minute later as Hunter Wong’s pass split Prairie defenders and Johnson chipped the charging goalie.

After a 3-0 halftime lead, the Lions were a recipient of a Prairie own-goal in the 48th minute, and Hunter Wong (JR) beat a recently substituted goalkeeper to make it 5-0 with 25 minutes left in the game.  Despite their ability to possess the ball and go forward with numbers up attacking, Prairie wouldn’t go away, and used a long throw-in into the penalty box to score their only goal of the game against the Lions, but much too late to do any real damage.

Lions break the streak

Final: Linn-Mar 5-2 Iowa City West

Early in his career, Coach Brinkmeyer’s 2001 team beat Iowa City West…Since then, the Lions had gone winless; that is, until Tuesday night. Despite a slow start, and giving up an early goal to the Trojans (just the second time the Lions have not scored first this season), Hunter Wong (JR) tied the game at one in the 18th minute.  The Trojans would again take the lead before the end of the half in the 25th minute though, creating a 2-1 deficit for the Lions to the defending state champions.  After meeting in the team room and discussing what went wrong in the 1st half, the Lions got on the scoreboard just two minutes after kickoff on the Devin Eby (JR) goal. Leroy Enzugusi (SO) added a goal in the 44th minute to give the Lions their first lead of the night.  Brothers Daniel (SR) and Nathan Luzindya (JR) rounded out the evening’s scoring giving the Lions a 5-2 Conference and Division win.  The Lions are still perfect in the Valley Division with just one opponent remaining later in May (Dubuque Senior).
