Tonight was the first of a busy three-game week for the Lions, and again, rain was expected, making the result more miserable than just what the scoreboard read. The Cougars capitalized on their opportunities in front of goal, while Linn-Mar was too content in front of theirs…and when they were aggressive, the Lions were penalized. Linn-Mar had an apparent goal taken off the scoreboard when our attacker collided with the Kennedy goalkeeper (meanwhile, a similar collision with the Lions’ goalkeeper was allowed). Man of the Match was Zach Galvin.
In the JV1 game, the score ended in a scoreless draw, the team’s fourth tie of the year.
Looking for their first conference win, Linn-Mar played host to Wahlert on Thursday night…their second 2A ranked 2A opponent of the week. The Lions played well, controlling much of the first half possession, but continued to struggle in the most important offensive category-GOALS. Wahlert scored first on an errant clearance 10 minutes into the second half. Linn-Mar answered with a PK (Ryan Johnson-SR) five minutes later. Wahlert scored the game-winning goal with ten minutes remaining, and tacked on an insurance goal with 90 seconds left. Man of the Match was Ryan Johnson.
JV1 earned their first win of the season, 3-0, with goals by Zack Hofmann, Breckin Meyer, and Leon Enzugusi.
The Lions had been working hard over the last week, and really took the game to Xavier early on. Linn-Mar possessed the ball, attacked with numbers, and used the whole field to get to the Saints goal, but it took until early in the second half until the Lions could get on the scoreboard. Ethan Fish (SR) served an opportunistic ball into the box on a free kick from half field, and Linn-Mar earned a PK for their efforts. Kody Waterman (SR) converted his second PK this season. Not to be outdone, Xavier came back and knotted the game up with a PK of their own. Xavier would eventually earn the win in a Shootout, following two Golden Goal overtime periods. The Man of the Match was Ethan Fish.
The JV1 team controlled much of their game as well, and scored their first goal of the season, but Xavier tied the game with five minutes remaining, and the game ended in a tie… the Lions third tie of the year.
