On Thursday, the Lions faced their first competitor of the season, in the Metro Jamboree. The Lions took on the Jefferson J-Hawks, at Mt. Mercy’s (new) Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex. The Lions came out on top, with a 1-0 victory, in just 40 minutes of play. Ryan Johnson, scored the goal, taking advantage of a bobble by the Jefferson goalkeeper in the third minute. The team looked good in just it’s 2nd day outdoors, since last Friday, and 23 of the 25-man roster saw time on the field. The game will not officially count toward the team’s record, however, because it is considered a scrimmage by the IAHSAA. The team will officially begin it’s season this Saturday, when the Lions travel to Iowa City to play a non-conference double-header against Urbandale and Ankeny Centennial.
We had a good opportunity to get everyone in and to see everyone play tonight, but that’s the positive takeaway. Like every team right now we have work to do, but we knew that coming in. Limited practice tomorrow and then the games that count begin on Saturday. Games at 9am and 12:30, in Muscatine. Thanks to those of you who bundled up and came out to watch…we heard you!
